A Revival of Cambodian Arts

Cambodia is a country full of culture, arts and music. However, a lot of this art was destroyed in the civil war and many artists, actors, musicians and writers were killed by the Khmer Rouge. Meanwhile, the war is over and Cambodia is on its way to rebuild a stable country with a strong economy. Cambodian Living Arts is succeeding in bringing back this culture by supporting surviving artists to save and protect Cambodia's artistic heritage. Web Essentials is proud to present the new Cambodian Living Arts website. The design of the former website was refined to highlight the beauty of the Khmer style and the structure of the website was optimized for users to easily find the information they are looking for. On the website, there is an opportunity to sign up for courses and to attend classes. Visitors can also purchase online tickets for PlaePakaa shows and make payments online. In addition, all of the collected information is being fed directly into a 3rd party client relationship management system so that the Marion Institute can follow up on the potential and people of interest. Marion Institute is a U.S. based non-profit organization that serves as an incubator for organizations that inspire positive change in the areas of healing and sustainability. This new website is a great example of a multipurpose website. The Cambodian Living Art brand is being described, the website serves to market the Cambodian Living Art products, shows and other services and holds the functionalities for immediate lead generation and even direct sales. So, why wait? Go see the wonderful new website for yourself and book some tickets for an upcoming Plae Pakaa show!

Danet on Agile

What comes to your mind when talking about Agile? Based on principle, Agile is an iterative method of determining requirements for engineering and information technology development projects in a highly flexible and interactive manner. From Danet's prospective, Agile is all about responsibility and commitment. Being integrated into the first Agile team at Web Essentials, Danet felt both nervous and excited working on this new system. Through some difficulties and eases, Danet and her team had many lessons learnt to share with other developers at her company. Talking about exciting experience over Agile, all team members were eager to express about the freedom in choosing and estimating tasks. As the matter of fact, Agile is flexible for each people in the team to choose and work on their favorite tasks; they need to make sure they deliver those tasks successfully. As a daily routine, they also held a stand up meeting to update each other or to ask for help from their scrum master. This system did encourage them a lot since it showed that all members were crucial in decision making and project management. However, there were also some obstacles during their implementation. Danet said “ it is just like killing ourselves when we did not carefully prepare the estimate”. Due to the fact that Agile requires each developers to estimate their own tasks, they may end up working late to complete their work if they did a wrong prediction. Although it was the first Agile based project, WE team appreciated the result since their clients was happy with the outcome.

First Impression on TYPO3

Vibol Yoeung, a student from PNC, was excited when he first got involved with TYPO3. Having used Joomla and PHP for years, Vibol had never heard of TYPO3 until Web Essentials conducted a workshop at his school. He was impressed by the advanced user-friendliness of this CMS and eager to learn more about TYPO3, he spent more time researching as well as attending trainings and related discussions. He says he was very happy to be part of the internship program with Web Essentials in order to gain more skills in TYPO3.
Vibol sees TYPO3 as a powerful CMS since there are many dedicated developers all around the world keeping an eye on development and help fix bugs or reporting issues. Additionally, there are also many useful extensions, which developers can use to build sophisticated websites. He recommends this CMS to Cambodian students due to its growing popularity and advantages.

Web Essentials Welcomes Christmas and New Year 2012

Christmas and New Year celebration is a very enjoyable and happy time for everybody. For Web Essentials, it is a special occasion to gather all staff and their families together for a party. So, what did Web Essentials actually do to celebrate this special occasion?
On December 17, Web Essentials threw a wonderful Christmas party at Elephant Blanc resort. This celebration was a special time filled with fun events and delicious meals for the staff and their family members. To begin the Christmas party, our director, Dominik, shared how Christmas has always brought him new hopes and dreams to develop Web Essentials. This party was more exceptional than last year’s since we planned an interactive program including role-play of the Christmas story, show contest, gift exchange and dancing. The party was filled with memorable activities because of active contribution from all staff. Everyone had major roles in their performances and demonstrated how creative and funny they can be on stage. We especially prepared gifts for the best performance. We even had presents for the kids which were handed out by Rebecca, the HR and Admin manager.
Time seemed to fly while we enjoyed the party together. Laughing, smiling and joy was certainly in every staff. This great moment showed that we are all in the same unique family, the WE family.

Better Plan TYPO3 Projects with Agile Estimating

Absolute estimating of programming tasks proves to be challenging in (too) many cases. When development takes longer than foreseen, any or several of the following areas are impacted: quality, finances, resource planning and client satisfaction. Studies reveal that 2 out of 3 software development projects are unsuccessful because they are over budget, late, missing function or a combination – in short: estimating fails frequently enough.
Agile Estimating - Better Project Management
Agile Estimating is a methodology for project managers to better plan their projects in advance and to keep their planning up-to-date and accurate throughout the development process. Violeng Mam, head of the project managers team at Web Essentials and Dominik Stankowski, CEO of Web Essentials presented Agile Estimating at the TYPO3 Conference T3CON11 in Germany.
Agile Estimating - Talk at T3CON11 in Frankfurt
The talk has been attended by a good number of participants and has triggered interesting discussions about the importance of solid project management. We believe that project management will become increasingly important in Web development projects as more and more websites are transitioning to Web applications and new technical complexities will have to be faced and overcome. New business requirements and better interoperability with other systems is going to put high demands on project teams.
Agile Estimating - How It Works
In Agile Estimating, estimates of tasks are done on a relative basis using an independent unit instead of hours or days. As the team progresses on its tasks, indicators such as the actual business situation, the constitution of the team, the learning progress of the team members and the feedback of the client are tracked. These indicators are fed back into an updated planning allowing for more accurate forecasts and giving a better basis for decision making.
